The best time to post on TikTok

On TikTok the hour genuinely matters — unlike YouTube. Here is why, and where TikTok tells you your own answer.

A steel stopwatch on a near-black surface, its dial blank except for hairline tick marks, with a single cyan sweep hand.

We looked at this for YouTube and the answer was that timing barely matters. TikTok is the opposite case, and it is worth being clear about why, because the same advice gets copied across both platforms as though they work the same way.

The short answer

Post when your own followers are online. TikTok will tell you when that is:

  1. Open the TikTok app, go to your profile, then Analytics. You need a Business or Creator account — switching is free and takes a moment.
  2. Open the Followers tab.
  3. Read the follower activity chart, by hour and by day.
  4. Post at the front edge of a peak, not the middle of it.

Why the hour counts here and not on YouTube

YouTube is a search and recommendation engine with a long tail — a video can find its audience in month three. TikTok is a feed. When you post, the video goes to a relatively small group of people first, and what happens next depends on what they do: whether they watch it through, whether they rewatch, whether they engage.

Posting into a dead hour does not cap that. It just means the first batch takes longer to assemble, and the signal TikTok is reading is noisier while it does. That is a real effect and a modest one.

What it is not is the reason a video did not work. Completion rate is the thing TikTok responds to most, and no posting time rescues a video people scroll past.

If the chart is flat

A small or internationally-spread audience often has no meaningful peak, and that is a finding rather than a failure to read the chart. Post when it suits you and put the attention into the first two seconds of the video instead.

What to actually do

  • Read the chart once and pick a slot. It does not reward weekly re-tuning.
  • Space multiple posts out. Two videos an hour apart compete for the same viewers.
  • Do not chase a universal peak. “7pm Tuesday” is an average of everyone, and everyone posting then is exactly the argument against it.

And if you are posting the same clip elsewhere, the peaks do not line up — TikTok’s is not Instagram’s and neither is YouTube’s. That is the problem ViewPrinter exists for: say what to post, where and when, once.
