TikTok shadowban: how to actually check
TikTok calls it "ineligible for the For You feed", documents it, shows it to you in the app, and lets you appeal. Most guides never mention that screen.
Same shape as Instagram: the word is not TikTok’s, the mechanism is real, and there is a screen in the app that answers the question most articles ask you to infer from your analytics.
What TikTok actually calls it
“Ineligible for the For You feed.” That is the documented status, and it applies per video. There is also an account-level equivalent — ineligible for recommendation — which is the closer match to what people mean by a shadowbanned account.
Neither is silent, which is the whole point. TikTok surfaces both, and lets you appeal.
Where to look
- Open your profile and the menu.
- Settings and privacy.
- Account → Account status.
- Look for videos tagged “Not eligible for the For You feed”.
The cause people miss
Of the three documented causes — guideline violations, unoriginal or re-uploaded content, and engagement manipulation — the middle one catches the most people who were not trying to break anything.
Reposting a clip that started somewhere else, running the same video across accounts, or uploading something visibly downloaded from another platform all sit in that bucket. It is not a punishment for cross-posting your own work; it is a filter on content the For You feed has already seen.
Which is worth knowing if you publish the same video to several places: posting your own original clip natively to each platform is fine, and materially different from re-uploading a watermarked download.
What to do
- Check the status screen before assuming anything.
- If a video is flagged, appeal it or take it down.
- If nothing is flagged, stop looking. Chasing a shadowban that is not there costs more than the flat week did.
